It’s not often I get excited about ‘American-Style’ diners opening up here in the UK. They’re usually ever so disappointing. But when I came across news that an American smokehouse was coming to town, I had to check it out!
Hickory’s, founded in Chester by Neil McDonnell in 2010 is renown for its focus on food quality, customer service and authenticity. Extensive research has gone into American BBQ and smokehouse foods and transporting guests to the good ol USA with atmosphere and flavour is what Hickory’s is all about.
Based in Gresty Green (one of many UK locations), Hickory’s has only been open since the end of last year and i’ve already been close to 10 times and I just can’t get enough!
Hickory’s Gresty Green Interior

Even as you approach Hickory’s you can tell this isn’t no ordinary restaurant. With its old-western feel and ‘southern-style’ interior you are instantly transported to the good-ol USA.
Walking through the wooden interior you will see an open kitchen and chef’s bar in addition to fire pits roaring as each piece of steak, rib and more is being slow-cooked to absolute perfection. Our waiter guided us to our table, brought us large bottle of water and some free popcorn to nibble on.

The chilled bar surrounded with TV screens would make a great atmosphere for sports nights. WWE pay-per-view events and don’t even get me started on the Super Bowl! With all you can eat wings, beer and the game on TV there would be no place better to watch the big game!
If that wasn’t all there is even a movie theatre with films playing throughout the day. Kids and adults alike can chill out and watch a great range of movies on offer.
With an outdoor play area including a table-tennis table I can imagine Hickory’s being the place to be this summer.
Hickory’s Gresty Green Menu
From American style breakfast waffles to famous hot wings. In addition to giant desserts to match the giant steaks it’s safe to say you won’t be spoiled for choice.

I’ve tried the majority of starters on the menu now and whilst the nachos weren’t what you call ‘authentic’ in anyway shape or form every other dish hasn’t disappointed. At the time of this review I tried out the Homicide Hot Wings and they certainly have quite the kick! So much flavour and heat at the same time and it’s well worth trying if you think you’re brave enough.

For mains I was feeling brave. I ordered myself a smokehouse platter for one. This huge meal consists of Memphis style ribs, Smoked pork, cheese and jalepeno sausage, BBQ pulled pork and beans, 8hr smoked beef brisket, Kansas style smoked ribs and Texas brisket. It took me a good 30-minutes but I polished it off eventually and my god was it delcious.
Overall

Friendly staff members, authentic atmosphere and incredible food you’d be a fool not to check out Hickory’s. This is hands down the best place i’ve been to in the UK to get authentic American food. I will be sure to keep going back to try out EVERYTHING on the menu in 2019.
